Prof. Simon Schultz
Simon Schultz is Professor of Neurotechnology in the Department of Bioengineering at Imperial College London, and Director of the Imperial College Centre for Neurotechnology. He holds additional positions as Affiliate Faculty at the Sainsbury-Wellcome Centre for Neural Circuits and Behaviour at UCL, and Visiting Scientist at the RIKEN Center for Brain Science, Tokyo. He studied Physics, Applied Mathematics and Electrical Engineering in Australia (at Monash and Sydney Universities) before receiving a D.Phil. in Neuroscience at the University of Oxford. After postdoctoral research at New York Univerity and UCL, he founded his laboratory at Imperial in 2004. His achievements include developments in the use of information theory to study neuroscience datasets, the use of advanced optical for studying how sensory and cognitive information is represented in the brain, and robotically automated micropipette monitoring of targeted cells in the brain. His current research focus is on memory – ranging from studying how the structure of memories changes in the brain over time, to neurotechnology for memory enhancement. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Engineering and Technology (FIET) and of the Royal Society of Biology (FRSB).
