Hugo Layard Horsfall
Hugo is a Neurosurgery Registrar in London, training at UCL’s National Hospital for Neurology and Neurology and at Imperial. He is an incoming Clinical Doctoral Fellow at the Francis Crick Institute and UCL, where he will study for his PhD in Neurotechnology. Hugo is leading a first-in-Europe trial implanting a Neuropixel into the human brain during neurosurgery at UCL. He also secured funding from the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies to implant a novel electrode, developed with Nanoengineers at ETZ Zurich, into children’s brains undergoing planned surgery for epilepsy at Great Ormond Street Hospital. Separate to his interests in neurotechnology, Hugo is a Senior Clinical Research Fellow at the Surgical Technology Group, UCL and has published extensively on digital surgery, innovation, and robotics. Most notably, he recently published an international framework for the development and assessment of surgical robots in Nature. Hugo is driven to better understand and deliver on the clinical translation of BCI, and has founded the ImpaCT Network, an intra-university network to foster collaboration between disciplines for BCI research and ultimately, patient benefit.”
