Abel Wajnerman Paz is an Assistant Professor of Neuroethics at the Institute of Applied Ethics at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile (Santiago de Chile). He obtained his PhD in Philosophy at the University of Buenos Aires (2014) and was a CONICET (2015-2017) and a FONDECYT Postdoctoral Fellow (2018-2021). His main areas of interest are the Philosophy of Cognitive Neuroscience and Neuroethics. His research is focused on the ontological and epistemic relationship between cognitive phenomena and neural mechanisms, and how it can shape our understanding of four key ethical concepts: mental integrity, personal identity, mental privacy, and autonomy. His current Research Project from the Chilean National Agency for Research and Development, entitled “Exploring the conceptual foundations of neurorights” (2022-2025) aims to ground some of the key ethical and legal notions underlying the Chilean framework for the regulation of neurotechnology, on epistemic, metaphysical and ethical frameworks developed within the Philosophy of Neuroscience. He has been part of several expert advisory groups for policymakers in Chile and abroad. Obtuvo su Doctorado en Filosofía en la Universidad de Buenos Aires (2014) y fue Becario Postdoctoral CONICET (2015-2017) y FONDECYT (2018-2021). Sus principales áreas de interés son la Filosofía de la Neurociencia Cognitiva y la Neuroética. Su investigación se centra en la relación ontológica y epistémica entre los fenómenos cognitivos y los mecanismos neuronales, y cómo pueden dar forma a nuestra comprensión de cuatro conceptos éticos clave: integridad mental, identidad personal, privacidad mental y autonomía. Su actual Proyecto de Investigación de la Agencia Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo de Chile, titulado «Explorando los fundamentos conceptuales de los neuroderechos» (2022-2025) pretende fundamentar algunas de las nociones éticas y legales clave que subyacen al marco chileno para la regulación de la neurotecnología, en marcos epistémicos, metafísicos y éticos desarrollados dentro de la Filosofía de la Neurociencia. Ha formado parte de varios grupos de expertos asesores de responsables políticos en Chile y en el extranjero.
